Speculation is ripe about travel nursing especially in this period of recession. So far, the economic situation has really put pressure on the end year budget, really reducing the number of open travel nurse positions. So much so, that the travelers are really fighting for the few remaining places. However, it is believed that with the replenishment of the budget in 2009, things will begin to look up but right now things are tight. To maximize chances of getting an assignment, it is advisable to get the papers in order now and even talk to the recruiter so that the profile is ready for submission immediately the new posts open. It is also important to be highly flexible in terms of the shifts to be worked and the locations to which you will travel. However, although the economy is declining the demand for such nurses continues to increase. In fact, it has been asserted that their current salaries are at their highest peak ever.
Given the tough economic times, a career in travel nursing with the entailing freedom, stability and flexibility could actually
be the shield that is needed to get one out of the tough economic times. In fact, now may be the best time to launch into such a career. This is because as a travel nurse, one is free to choose their destination, meaning that they can very well choose areas, which will put the least possible strain on their budgets. With the cost of food, housing and gas going up, the purchasing power of individuals has been seriously compromised; a situation that can be averted if one chooses to go to a location where the standards of living are lower. Other benefits may include a guaranteed pay assignment, which would mean that although a shift has been cancelled, this nurse will still get paid. Each time one moves to another assignment there is a wide variety of choices waiting and they all come with generous benefits. Thus contrary to speculations, a travel nursing career gives one an advantage over the poorly performing economy and is actually the strategy being adopted by many to shield their families from the challenging times.
Overall, whether in stable or tough economic times, there are several concerns that a travel nurse should look into. First is the fact that their compensation package could cause an audit by the IRS as they cause valid tax deductions to appear abnormally high. Another is if one gets hurt on the job, their compensation will be based only on their taxable wages. Thirdly is that the social security retirement will be based on the taxable returns only and the fourth concern is that in case of overtime work the pay will be based on the taxable hourly wage and lastly. It may be difficult to get loans as the loan officers will base their decision to give loans on the nurses being paid at 12 dollars per hour. However, this is a lucrative career and those who feel up to it should not hesitate.
